Position and Soil

Give Oyster Mushroom a shaded or dappled spot. It does best in free-draining soil with a pH around 6 to 7. Dig through plenty of compost before planting, and mulch to hold moisture and keep weeds down. It grows happily in a pot of Bucket, bag, or log, which makes it a fine choice for balconies and courtyards.

Sowing and Spacing

Sow seed about 0 cm deep. Seedlings usually appear in around 7 days, fastest when the soil is between 15 and 25 degrees.

Pleurotus ostreatus. The easiest mushroom to grow at home. Grows on straw, coffee grounds, cardboard or hardwood logs. Kits available for beginners, or make your own substrate. Fruits in flushes every 2-3 weeks. Works indoors year-round in every climate zone. The gateway mushroom for home growers.

Care

Water consistently, roughly 5 L per plant every day in warm weather, less in cool or wet spells. Feed every few weeks through the growing season with a balanced organic fertiliser, and keep mulch topped up.

Pests and Diseases

Keep an eye out for Fungus gnats. The main diseases to watch are Contamination (mould). Good spacing, watering at the base rather than over the leaves, and crop rotation prevent most problems. See our Pest and Disease Guide to identify and fix any issue.

Harvesting and Storage

Oyster Mushroom is typically ready to harvest in roughly 3 weeks. Fridge in paper bag for 5-7 days. Dry or freeze for longer storage.

In the Kitchen

In the kitchen, oyster mushroom is good pan-fried with butter and garlic, added to pasta and risotto, used as a meat substitute and dried and rehydrated for soups. Nutritionally: rich in B vitamins and iron and contains beta-glucans for immune support.
