Varroa Treatments Used Overseas — and Where Australia Stands
The wider toolkit other countries lean on, why some of it isn't allowed here, and the reasons good beekeepers still lose hives.
Australia is only a few seasons into living with Varroa destructor. Countries like New Zealand, the United States and much of Europe have managed it for two to three decades, and over that time they have built a broader toolbox than the one we can legally reach for today. This page lays that toolbox out plainly — what is working overseas, what is not, and which of it is not currently registered or permitted in Australia — so you can understand the full picture and make informed decisions with your state authority and the national program.
First: why hives still crash, even with treatment
Before the shopping list, the uncomfortable truth. Most heavy losses — the beekeeper who tells you they lost 50 hives despite using strips — are not really a “which product” problem. They come down to four things no single treatment fixes:
- Resistance is already in the country. Agriculture Victoria has confirmed varroa carrying both pyrethroid resistance (flumethrin/Bayvarol, tau-fluvalinate/Apistan) and amitraz resistance (Apivar, Apitraz) in Victoria, Queensland, NSW and South Australia — a separate mite incursion that arrived already resistant. If your “acid strips” are actually amitraz or pyrethroid strips and they aren't working, resistance is a real possibility. A wash before and after treatment is the only way to know.
- Reinvasion (“mite bombs”). When untreated or collapsing colonies nearby fail, robbing bees carry those mites straight back into your healthy hives. You can treat perfectly and still be reloaded within weeks if the apiaries around you aren't managed. Varroa is an area problem, not a single-hive one.
- Treating too late. Mite numbers explode during the nectar flow while colonies are full of brood, and the damage shows up afterwards, heading into winter. Treat on the number, not the calendar.
- Skipping the after-check. No post-treatment wash means you never learn that a treatment failed until the colony is already going backwards.

What Australia can legally use right now
Eight products are registered or permitted here, and they cover every major mode of action. This is a genuinely capable kit — the gap with overseas is smaller than it feels:
- Formamidines — amitraz: Apivar, Apitraz (strips).
- Pyrethroids: Bayvarol (flumethrin), Apistan (tau-fluvalinate) strips.
- Organic acids & oils: Api-Bioxal (oxalic acid), Aluen CAP (oxalic acid extended-release strips), Formic Pro (formic acid), Apiguard (thymol).

Treatments used overseas that aren't (yet) on Australia's list
These are legitimately used in other countries with good results. Some may reach Australia through future registrations or permits; some never will. They are listed for understanding, not as a how-to.

The overseas tactics you can adopt today — for free
The best ideas from long-time varroa countries aren't chemicals at all. None of these need a permit, and every one is fair game in Australia right now:
- Drone brood removal. Mites prefer drone cells. Cutting out capped drone comb in spring physically removes a chunk of the breeding population. Cheap, chemical-free, no withholding.
- Brood breaks. Caging the queen or splitting creates a broodless window where oxalic acid (which can't reach mites under cappings) suddenly hits nearly all of them.
- Varroa-resistant stock. Requeening with hygienic / VSH lines is the long game overseas breeders swear by. Back Australian breeding programs as resistant queens become available.
- Area-wide coordination. The single biggest lever against reinvasion. Talk to nearby beekeepers, treat in the same windows, and report through the national program so the pressure drops for everyone.

Registrations and permits change — the APVMA keeps adding options as the science and the paperwork catch up.
