Western Australia: Free Plants, Rebates and Garden Freebies

Every free plant program, garden rebate and freebie available to WA residents. Perth metro councils, waterwise rebates and the $150 Treebate.

Programs verified June 2026
The WA Government will pay you $150 to plant a native tree in your yard. 10,000 Treebates available per year until 2029.

City of Stirling free plants and rebates

Free Trees and Plants

Free Plants
Up to 4 free trees and 10 native plants per household annually

Who: Stirling residents.

How: Part of the Living Green Program. The 2026 round opened in March. Check the council website for availability and collection details.

Verge Mulch Starter Pack

Who: Stirling residents.

How: Register through the Living Green Program. Places are limited to around 200 per round.

5 free native seedlings per household

Who: Homeowners and occupiers within the City of Joondalup.

How: Expressions of interest open early March each year. Register via the council website or news page and collect your seedlings at the designated event.

How: Purchase your composting equipment and apply for the rebate through the council's Environment Grants, Rebates and Subsidies page.

How: Apply through the council website. Covers the cost of plants, soil wetter and soil improver for waterwise verge planting.

Who: Cockburn residents.

How: Collect a free compost caddy from council offices. Use it to collect kitchen scraps for your compost bin or green waste.

Western Metropolitan Regional Council free mulch

Free Garden Mulch

Service
Free mulch for residents of member councils, available year-round

Who: Residents of WMRC member councils (includes parts of the western Perth metro area).

How: Check the WMRC website for collection locations and any quantity limits. Mulch is produced from green waste and available throughout the year.

Statewide Programs

These apply across Western Australia, no matter which council you're in.

WA Government Treebate

Rebate
$150 rebate on a WA-native tree (must reach 3m+ canopy at maturity)

Who: Any WA resident aged 18 or over.

How: Purchase a WA-native tree from any WA nursery. The tree must be expected to reach a canopy of 3 metres or larger at maturity. Claim your $150 rebate through the ServiceWA app. There are 10,000 rebates available per year and the program runs until 2029.

Most WA-native trees that qualify cost $20 to $60 at a nursery. The $150 rebate more than covers the cost, so the tree is effectively free with money left over for soil and mulch.

Water Corporation Rainwater Tank Rebate

Rebate on purchase and plumbing of a rainwater tank

Who: Residents in the South West and Great Southern regions.

How: Purchase and install a rainwater tank connected to your toilet or washing machine. Apply for the rebate through the Water Corporation. Program runs September 2025 to May 2026.

Rebate on eligible irrigation services

Who: WA residents with eligible irrigation systems.

How: Have your irrigation system serviced by an eligible provider and apply for the rebate through the Water Corporation. Program runs September 2025 to May 2026.

Community Gardens Grants

Program
Up to $10,000 for community garden projects

Who: Community groups across Western Australia.

How: Apply through the annual state government grant round. Funding covers raised beds, shade structures, soils and mulch. One round per year.

National Tree Day Giveaways (late July)

Many WA councils run free plant giveaways for National Tree Day in late July each year. Check your council's events calendar or the Planet Ark site for local events near you.
