Every free plant program, compost subsidy and garden freebie from Victorian councils. Pick your council and start claiming.

Your rates pay for this stuff, you may as well claim it. Victoria's Landcare grants alone are worth $3.55 million in 2026, and dozens of councils offer free plants, compost subsidies and garden assessments.

City of Casey free plants and rebates

Native Plant Giveaway

Free indigenous plants via voucher + optional free garden assessment

Who: Casey residents.

How: Register in March for a voucher redeemable for free indigenous plants. You can also request a free garden assessment to help you choose the right species for your property.

City of Stonnington free plants and rebates

Native Plant Giveaway

Free Plants
Over 2,000 free native seedlings across 12 species

Who: Stonnington residents.

How: Check stonnington.vic.gov.au for event dates. The giveaway runs at announced locations across the municipality, and seedlings are first come, first served.

Mornington Peninsula Shire free plants and rebates

Free Tree Giveaway + The Briars Nursery

Free Plants
Free trees at giveaway events, plus indigenous plants at low or no cost from The Briars Nursery

Who: Local residents of the Mornington Peninsula.

How: Attend free tree giveaway events run by the Shire throughout the year. The Briars Nursery also sells indigenous plants at low cost, and some are available for free depending on the program. Check the Shire website for event dates.

Compost System Subsidy

Rebate
$50 subsidy per household per year on compost systems

Who: Mornington Peninsula residents. One claim per household per year.

How: Purchase a compost bin, worm farm or bokashi system, then apply to the Shire for the $50 subsidy.

Free Plants Program
Free native plants for private properties, schools and community groups

Who: Private property owners, schools and community groups in the Yarra Ranges.

How: Apply via yarraranges.vic.gov.au. The program provides free native plants to help revegetate and connect wildlife corridors across private land.

Cardinia Shire free plants and rebates

Free Indigenous Plant Giveaway

Free Plants
Approximately 5 free indigenous plants per household (runs periodically)

Who: Cardinia Shire residents.

How: Run in partnership with the Cardinia Environment Coalition Nursery. The giveaway runs periodically throughout the year. Check council's website or social media for upcoming dates.

City of Greater Geelong free plants and rebates

Free Street Tree Planting

Free Plants Service
Free tree planted outside your property on the nature strip

Who: Any property owner in the City of Greater Geelong.

How: Submit a request at geelongcity.vic.gov.au. Planting runs from April to September each year. Council handles species selection, planting and establishment.

Who: Greater Geelong residents.

How: Council partners with Wormlovers to offer discounted compost bins, worm farms and accessories. One discounted product per household.

Merri-bek (formerly Moreland) free plants and rebates

Free Mulch

Service
Free self-serve mulch, open to the public

Where: Council Operations Centre, 40-46 South Street, Hadfield.

How: Bring your own trailer or ute. The mulch is available during business hours on a self-serve basis. No booking required.

Free Recycled Compost for Community Gardens

Service
Free recycled compost delivered to community gardens (450+ cubic metres since 2019)

Who: Community gardens in the Merri-bek municipality.

How: Community garden groups can request free recycled compost delivery through council. Over 450 cubic metres have been delivered since 2019.

Gardens for Wildlife programs across Victoria

Gardens for Wildlife

Program Free Plants
Free garden assessments by trained volunteers, native planting advice, and some councils include free plant vouchers

How it works: Trained volunteers visit your garden for free, identify what wildlife habitat you already have, and give tailored advice on native plants to attract birds, insects and other wildlife. Some participating councils include free plant vouchers as part of the program.

Participating councils: Knox, Darebin, City of Melbourne, Boroondara, Geelong, Casey, Kingston, Merri-bek and Brimbank. More councils join regularly.

How to join: Visit the Gardens for Wildlife Victoria website for the full list of affiliated councils and sign up through your local council's program page.

Even if your council is not listed yet, check back regularly. New councils join the program each year, and some run their own similar schemes under different names.

These apply across Victoria, no matter which council you're in.

Compost Revolution / Compost Community Subsidies

Rebate
40 to 80% off compost bins, worm farms and bokashi systems

Who: Residents in participating council areas.

How: Visit compostrevolution.com.au or compostcommunity.com.au and enter your address to check your council's offer. Complete a short online tutorial, then order your subsidised system. Confirmed participating councils include City of Melbourne, Maroondah, Knox, Mornington Peninsula, Brimbank and Mitchell Shire.

Victorian Landcare Grants

Program
$3.55 million in 2026. Project grants up to $20,000, support grants up to $500.

Who: Landcare groups and environmental volunteer groups across Victoria.

How: Apply through environment.vic.gov.au when rounds open. Project grants fund on-ground works like revegetation, weed control and habitat restoration. Support grants help with group running costs like insurance and training.

How: The City of Melbourne runs a network of community gardens and compost hubs. Find your nearest garden or hub and get involved. Some gardens have waiting lists, so register early.
