Northern Territory: Free Plants, Rebates and Garden Freebies

Every free plant program, compost rebate and garden freebie available in the NT. Darwin ratepayers have more council freebies than most people realise.

City of Darwin has given away 80,000+ free native plants since 2021, distributing over 15,000 per financial year.

Native Plant Giveaway

Free Plants
Up to 6 free native plants per household per event

Who: Darwin ratepayers only.

How: Free native plants are distributed at multiple events throughout the year. Over 15,000 plants go out per financial year, and the program has distributed 80,000+ since launching in 2021. Species range from canopy trees and acacias to groundcovers and shrubs, tailored to each suburb. Events run 8am to 11am. Limit of 6 plants per household per event.

Gardens for Wildlife

Membership
Free garden assessment, starter pack and 6 native plants

Who: Darwin residents, schools, community groups and businesses.

How: Members receive a free garden assessment visit, a starter pack with a fence sign, a habitat booklet, a voucher for 6 native plants, newsletters and invitations to workshops. Contact environment@darwin.nt.gov.au to join.

Compost Bin Rebate

Rebate
Up to $100 rebate on compost bins, worm farms or bokashi systems

Who: Darwin residents with proof of residency.

How: Buy a compost bin, worm farm (including first worms) or bokashi system (including first bokashi additives) from any NT supplier. Submit the online form with your receipt and proof of Darwin residency. Purchases under $100 are fully reimbursed. Purchases over $100 are capped at the $100 rebate.

Community Grants

Grant
$1,000 to $10,000 for community projects in Darwin

Who: Community groups within the Darwin municipality. Garden and sustainability projects are eligible.

How: Applications open 1 to 31 March each year, for projects delivered July to December. Contact communitygrants@darwin.nt.gov or call 08 8930 0300 for details.
